Naam Shabana – Movie Review

Naam Shabana

Director: Shivam Nair

Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Manoj Bajpayee

Naam Shabana is a prequel to the movie Baby which was launched in 2015. Producer Neeraj Pandey joins hands with director Shivam Nair in the movie. Neeraj Pandey has written the story himself.

Movie starts with two Indian Agents killed in Austria by an arms and trafficking kingpin Mikhail. Meanwhile, in India, Shabana (Taapsee) is a college student and very good kudo player.

Jay (Taher Shabbir) likes her a lot but Shabana does not show affection towards him. One evening, they go out and Shabana tells him about her dark past. Later on Shabana gets eve teased by a gang, Jay tries to rescue her but dies eventually.

Shabana now is hot headed as her dark past haunts her and now this sudden death of her innocent boyfriend leaves her wounded.

All of a sudden, Shabana gets an opportunity to join Indian secret agents. They offer her to kill Jay’s killers in exchange of her services to the country. Shabana has lost faith in the legal system so she agrees to the agent job.

She succeeds at killing Jay’s killers but soon she is sent for another mission which involves Tony (Prithviraj Sukumaran). Working with Mastermind Ranvir Singh (Manoj Bajpayee) and then with Ajay (Akshay Kumar) and Shukla (Anupam Kher), will she succeed in eliminating Tony?

Rozana is the only romantic track in the movie, rest of the songs don’t go with the story much and seem like a hindrance to the movie.

A good action film! Taapsee handles both actions and emotions well, although movie script is a bit weak. Akshay does a good job for his small part.

The magic of Baby cannot be recreated, this movie disappoints its fans.
